Effective Tips for Practicing English Singing
Hello! I'm Mayu, a professional theme park singer. ♪
In my previous article, I talked about a guide to getting started with English singing.
Today, I'd like to take it a step further and talk about how to actually put English singing into practice, including some specific and effective practice methods you can use in your daily training.

Effective Ways to Practice English Singing
To improve your English singing skills, it is important to think carefully about how you practice every day.
Of course, simply practicing for many hours does not necessarily mean that you will improve faster.
Singing uses one of the most important parts of your body—your voice and your throat. That is why it is essential to practice efficiently while taking good care of your voice and avoiding unnecessary strain.
Before focusing on how much you practice, let's first build a strong foundation and focus on the essential core elements of English singing.
Here are some key points to keep in mind.
1. Read the Lyrics Out Loud
Before you start singing, read the lyrics out loud.
This helps you become familiar with the pronunciation, rhythm, and natural flow of the English language before adding the melody.
Try to understand not only what each word means, but also how the words connect with one another and how the lyrics naturally flow when spoken.
2. Listen to Professional Native English Singers
Listen to songs performed by native English-speaking singers repeatedly and pay close attention to their pronunciation, rhythm, phrasing, tone, and emotional expression.
Personally, I believe that listening to and studying professional singers can be even more important than actually singing during your practice time.
When I have a professional performance coming up, I often spend around 80% of my preparation time listening, analyzing, researching, and studying the original performance, rather than simply practicing the song over and over.
Why?
Because you cannot sing something you don't understand.
Before you can reproduce a sound or expression, you first need to know what you are listening for.
Pay attention to questions such as:
How does the singer pronounce each word?
Where do they place emphasis?
How do they connect the words?
Where do they breathe?
How do they change their tone and volume?
What emotions are they expressing?
What makes their performance sound natural?
You don't have to analyze everything perfectly from the beginning. Start by listening carefully and trying to understand what makes the performance sound the way it does.
This kind of active listening and research can make a huge difference in your singing.
3. Record Yourself and Listen Back
When you actually practice singing, record your voice and listen back to it afterward.
Check your pronunciation, rhythm, pitch, phrasing, and overall expression. You may notice things in a recording that you simply cannot hear while you are singing.
Try to listen objectively rather than judging yourself too harshly.
The purpose of recording yourself is not to criticize your voice. It is to discover what you can improve.
4. Stay Relaxed While Singing
When you become nervous or tense, your voice can become tight and your natural expression may be restricted.
Try to stay relaxed while singing and avoid putting unnecessary tension on your throat.
Remember that singing should not feel like a struggle. Learning how to use your body and voice efficiently is an important part of developing healthy and expressive singing.
5. Take Regular Vocal Lessons
Self-practice is valuable, but learning from a professional vocal coach can help you improve more efficiently.
A coach can listen to your voice objectively, identify habits that you may not notice yourself, and help you develop techniques that are appropriate for your individual voice and goals.
Rather than simply practicing more, learning how to practice correctly can make your training much more effective.
By incorporating these techniques into your routine and continuing to practice consistently, you can steadily develop your English singing skills while taking better care of your voice.
